Data Recovery: Hard drive data recovery techniques explained

Hardware
The world of data recovery is a big mystery for most consumers and even some IT professionals. This is largely because hard drives themselves are complex devices and their technological specifics are not generally well known. Data recovery companies thrive on their customers’ lack of information and often get away with charging obscene rates for any recovery, regardless of complexity. I hope this article will be a helpful resource for consumers and professionals alike. I provide some basic information about data recovery by shedding some light on how hard drives work, how they can fail, what are the chances of successful recovery and how much the user can expect to pay. This information will enable the user to make an informed decision when choosing a data recovery company. A bit about Ha

“Social media strike” commences on June 4th

Internet, What's Hot
Some folks on the Internet are saying they will stay off social media on June 4th and June 5th as a way of showing dissatisfaction to the way social media platforms are being run. In a memo found on one LarrySanger.org, there's a proposal for something called "Declaration of Digital Independence" and the folks over there have launched a Change.org petition for people to show support to the cause and to stay clear of social media during the two-day strike starting on Thursday. Digital Independence as they put it, includes having full control of all private data belonging to a user by the user. They also want big social networks to stop acting like "silos" and allow posts to be seen across other social networks when posted on one. So far 512 people have signed the "Declaration of Di...

Trouble for Nigeria, other crude oil economies as Toyota, Honda produce cars that run on water

Autos, What's Hot
If you watched local TV channels at a lot in the late 2000s just like me, you must have seen that Bank PHB advert where they predicted that "one day, cars will run on water". The advert shows a man driving his car on the highway and when the fuel gauge signaled an empty tank, he stopped the car at a fueling station and refilled it with water before continuing his journey. Although Bank PHB is now defunct and transitioned into Keystone Bank or something, THAT day when cars are running on water is here and it doesn't look great for Nigeria. I will explain. World's largest car brand, Toyota, recently announced the 2020 Toyota Mirai HFC in Japan. Mirai is a Japanese word for future and the car itself is a hydrogen-powered sedan that is now being touted to replace our "normal" petrol-...

Innoson, a car manufacturer or just a company assembling cars?

Autos, What's Hot
Ever since the first set of 100 cars were rolled out from the stables of Innoson in Nnewi, a heavily industrialized city in the Southeastern Nigeria state of Anambra in November 2014, the most common question on everyone's lips seems to be: does Innoson actually manufacture cars or do they just sell assemble? This particular question dominates discussions anywhere industry experts are discussing cars and the name Innoson is mentioned, so much that people rarely have time to discuss the reliability, speed and other aspects of Innoson vehicles like they do when Toyota, Honda or Mercedes Benz is mentioned. The question was again a fiercely-argued topic at a social event yours faithfully attended last week (the event didn't even relate to technology or cars ) so I decided to address this is...

Doctors are free to leave Nigeria, we have more than enough – Labour minister

News
Nigeria's minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, has attracted criticism when he said that medical doctors are permitted to leave for greener pastures abroad, while also suggesting that the country has enough qualified doctors to take care of its patients. Ngige, who himself is a medical doctor, was speaking on Channel's TV Sunrise Daily on Wednesday. His words: "I am not worried (about doctors leaving the country). We have surplus. If you have surplus, you export. It happened some years ago here. I was taught chemistry and biology by Indian teachers in my secondary school days. "There are surplus in their country and we also have surplus in the medical profession in our country. I can tell you this. In my area, we have excess. "Who said we don’t have enough doctors? We have more th

Using Big Data to solve Lagos’ Traffic Problems

Technology: General, What's Hot
Lagos State is the busiest activity hub in Nigeria. Located in the South-west region, Lagos can easily be said to be the most advanced area in Nigeria in terms of overall development, technological advancement, infrastructural growth and as well, revenue generation. The land, surrounded by water, has experienced an influx in the number of citizens residing there over the years. This has led to the increase in population density and the problems that arise with it, one of those being traffic jams. Government and individuals have devised ways over the years to combat this issue of traffic. Some work, others just relieve the problem for a while till it doesn't work anymore. Currently, big data (i.e large amounts of digitized data) is seen as a way through which the Lagos traffic pro...

How to revert to WordPress classic editor (old editor)

Simple Tutorials, Webmaster
Updating WordPress to version 4.0 comes with so many exciting features. One of them include the new improved WordPress writing box or editor. Now not everyone loves new things. The principle of "if something is not broken don't fix it" comes to play. Some of us are so acquitted with the old dashboard, hate the new WordPress editor and want the old editor back even though we want to enjoy the other cool features that came with Wordpress 4 (and 5). To revert to old WordPress editor or classic editor, simply install the Classic Editor plugin from your WordPress dashboard. Activate and you're back to old Wordpress editor. It doesn't come with setup or anything so it's plug and play. To start using the new WordPress editor again simply deactivate the Classic Editor plugin fr...

I was banned from Reddit for posting that “Electric cars are not the future” (that Hydrogen cars are)

Autos
Editor's note: This is a rant article. So I found a new article on Reddit technology sub that says "UPS will start using Toyota's zero-emission hydrogen semi trucks". When I clicked on the CNET link and finished reading the article, I came back to Reddit, and said something like, "hey, I expected things like this to happen. I even have an article on my blog where I predicted Hydrogen cars taking over the world some day." And then I proceeded to get this article where I talked about how electric cars will flop because of fossil fuel being used in generating electricity to charge electric cars issues and other stuff. So, it seemed the Reddit technology subreddit is anti electric car criticism. It took about 2 minutes for some guy to comment this demeaning insult on my...

Autos, What's Hot
Benz or nothing. Mercedes and others. You must have surely heard any of these rhetoric from Mercedes Benz admirers if you stay in Nigeria, Africa's largest country by population. In Nigeria, people - especially young people - fantasize over Mercedes Benz products as though they are magical creatures and or they are totally different from other brands'. Don't get me wrong. Mercedes are QUITE different. But do they totally worth all the hype they get here? Nigeria is one of the poorest countries in the world. With 91 million living in abject poverty, the UN believes that more poor people are found in Nigeria than anywhere else in the world. But there's a growing trend among young people in Nigeria; One that has to do with many young men between the ages of 18 and 35 driving f...

Electric cars are not the future. Here’s why

Autos, What's Hot
With all the nice things being said about electric cars and how sales of battery-powered vehicles have been soaring recently, its common to see analysts predicting that electric cars will replace combustion engine cars in the nearest future. But that's not true my friend. Electric cars explained Electric vehicles (EVs) do not require fossil fuels like diesel or petrol to function neither do they litter the air with carbon-filled smoke when they run. The concept of EVs is to reduce global warming caused by combustion engine or fuel cars. When you charge an EV, a large quantity of electrical energy in stored in high capacity battery cells under the cabin or hood. After charging, the energy is then used to power the vehicle to travel distances. This way, there's no smoke...
