Facebook, in a bid to help its employees understand the needs of the people they are trying to please (in other words, customers) well has launched a lot of immersion programmes that would see the Facebook developers be in a typical shoe of whom they were building for.
Given that Android boasts a very large hold over the smartphone market, reportedly laying claim to about 82.8% of the total market, Facebook has sought for its employees to dump their iPhones in favor of Android devices so that they would be better familiarized with the concept they are working on and be able to build better features for the Android.
“I am mandating a switch of a whole bunch of my team over to Android, just because people, when left up to their own devices, will often prefer an iPhone,” said Chris Cox, Chief Product Officer of Facebook. “What we’re really trying to do is build empathy inside of the company and to really appreciate that the people we’re building for look less and less like us,” Cox added in continuance.
One of the other immersion programmes that Facebook also has in place is that of the “2G Tuesdays” which is when Facebook employees would get the chance to use 2G network on their app for an hour, helping them better understand the data needs of people in slow internet areas.
