Samsung Electronics on Wednesday announced the commencement of mass production of 12Gb LPDDR4 RAM chips using its 20nm process technology. This makes the Korean smartphone company the very first on the globe to achieve this breakthrough. The company had in a press release stated that this will allow the creation of smartphones with 6GB of RAM.
Samsung’s latest LPDDR4 is expected to significantly speedup the adoption of high capacity mobile DRAM globally. The 12Gb is not only the largest capacity and highest speed you can for a DRAM chip, but also offers awesome energy efficiency, reliability and ease of design. All aforementioned are germane to the development of next-generation devices.
Samsung also revealed that the latest 12Gb LPDDR4 RAM chips version will be 30 percent faster at 4,266 Mbps, and is also twice as fast as DDR4 DRAM for PCs*, while consuming 20 percent less energy. The company also raised the manufacturing productivity of the 12Gb LPDDR4 more than 50 percent over that of 20nm-class** 8GB LPDD4. This, according to Samsung will further drive the demand for higher capacity flagship mobile devices.
The Korean smartphone giant also said that the future flagships will feature 6GB of RAM, which will allow for “seamless multitasking and maximum performance within the latest operating system (OS) environments”.
