It’s once again show time for video-on-demand consumers in South Africa as locals Naspers gets set to launch a “Netflix killer,” ShowMax, this week.
The curtains will be raised off Showmax on the 19th August 2015 (Wednesday), revealing a VOD that is targeted at bringing the cheapest rates to viewers. To emphasize on that, Mybroadband has arranged a price table to rank ShowMax among all the services available in the country right now:
|VOD service||Price||Quality (up to)||Platforms|
|Netflix SD *||R166.28||480p SD||Everywhere|
|Netflix HD *||R179.13||1080p HD||Everywhere|
|Hulu *||Free||720p HD||Everywhere|
|Hulu Plus *||R166.28||720p HD||Everywhere|
|ShowMax Basic||Free||720p HD||Desktop, Android, iOS, Samsung, LG|
|ShowMax Premium||R99||720p HD||Desktop, Android, iOS, Samsung, LG|
|Vidi Unlimited Subscription||R149||720p HD||Desktop, Android, iOS, Samsung|
|MTN FrontRow Club||R119||720p HD||Desktop, Android, iOS|
To top it off, ShowMax, is bringing free streaming into the pack with ‘ShowMax Basic’ and this move should be a hard knock on US-based Netflix who is the current market leader in SA.
Naspers has announced it will kick off ShowMax with the streaming of top rated motion pictures like True Blood, Ray Donovan, Vikings and The Big Bang Theory.
